The XML protocol allows both the content originator and receiver to communicate with an agreed-upon language, and sometimes (if applicable) at an agreed-upon price. ICE is used for business-to-business (B2B) asset management, often for publishing content and/or e-commerce; however, nearly every element of the B2B asset exchange is automated.

The ICE server is often integrated with a content management system.
